World-Renowned Director and Producer Speaks at American InterContinental University London Graduation

London (June 28, 2010) – American InterContinental University London, a leading provider of internationally‐focused career education, recently welcomed acclaimed director, producer and humanitarian Firdaus Kharas as the commencement speaker at the June 4 graduation ceremony held at the historic Caogan Hall in Chelsea, London. The ceremony honored a diverse class of 181 graduates representing 55 countries.
Kharas is known for his innovative use of media to entertain, educate and address global issues. Kharas recently created a series of 30 animated public service announcements designed to prevent malaria infection by mosquitos. Titled “Buzz and Bite,” the campaign is running in more than 50 countries and translated into 38 languages, making it the world’s largest PSA campaign on any subject. During his career, Kharas has received the United Nations Peace Medal from the UN Secretary‐General and the medal of World Federation of UN associations in addition to more than 70 international awards he received just ithin the last few years.
During his speech, Kharas advised students to take what they have learned and use it to “make a small difference in the world.”
“Individuals have a lot to offer the world,” said Kharas. “If we all put an effort to using our strengths to help others, the world would be a much better place for everyone.”
During the ceremony, one student from each program was recognized with an “Outstanding Student” plaque as determined by AIU faculty and staff. Degrees ranging from associates to master’s were awarded with Bachelor’s of Fine Arts being the most popular degree. For those who were unable to attend, the ceremony was webcasted live through the Cadogen Hall website.
Dr. Greg Washington, AIU provost and chief academic officer, was on hand for the ceremony and delivered the welcome address. Washington was pleased to take part in this year’s graduation at AIU London as he is based in suburban Chicago.
“I’m honored to join our AIU London graduates, faculty and staff for this special occasion,” said Washington. “Our London campus provides students with a truly unique experience that blends international exposure and career‐focused education, and I’m thrilled to see the result of this experience in the accomplishments of our graduates.
A few weeks prior to graduation, AIU London hosted its 2010 Graduate Fashion Show and marketing exhibition to members of the media and fashion industry. The event featured the work of the top graduates receiving a B.A. in fashion design or fashion design and marketing, and provided a snapshot of the talent produced by AIU London this year.
