American InterContinental University South Florida in Weston hosted the sixth annual “Tributo a sus Logros” awards to honor the achievements of 16 Hispanic women, including AIU student and Costa Rican Kathia Fernandez.

16 Hispanic Women, including AIU Student, Honored During International Women’s Month in ‘Tribute to Her Achievements’

WESTON, Fla., March 24, 2010 – American InterContinental University South Florida in Weston hosted the sixth annual “Tributo a sus Logros” awards to honor the achievements of 16 Hispanic women, including AIU student and Costa Rican Kathia Fernandez.

Fernandez, a business major at AIU South Florida, was recognized for her achievements in overcoming adversity. After the death of her father when she was 13, Fernandez has endured breast cancer and a subsequent relapse, economic hardship, the death of her sister, two abusive personal relationships, and her daughter’s recent illness while managing to raise her children. Her son, who began his college career in 2008, served as her inspiration to continue her own education.

“It’s an honor to receive this award and share my story with other inspirational women,” Fernandez said. “My children are my strength and my inspiration. When my son started college, I decided to continue what I had once started but was unable to finish. Every day, when I look at myself in the mirror, I see a strong woman ready to overcome life’s obstacles. There have been no dark days in my life; only obstacles to test my faith.”

AIU Director of Marketing Karla Lopez nominated Fernandez and presented her the award. “We’re proud of Kathia’s accomplishments and those of the other recipients,” she said. “We’re also happy to host the awards again to recognize local Hispanic women. We’re continually working to provide opportunities for our students to further their success.”

News reporter Carinés Moncada from NBC/Telemundo hosted the award ceremony, introducing women of the community to present the awards to each recipient. She also called on the honorees to briefly share their personal stories.

Special guests included Diana Wasserman-Rubin, Broward Commissioner; Sandra Ruiz, Doral Councilwoman; Mercedes Henrikson, Weston Commissioner; Janette Lehr, Actress; and Angel Gomez, Weston Commissioner.
