Corrections is a key area of the criminal justice system concerned with the function and processes of penology, prison law and rehabilitation of offenders.

The goal of the BSCJ program with a specialization in Corrections and Case Management is to provide students with an opportunity to study the history of criminal punishment including modern penal systems, prisoners' rights, and factors used to develop personalized sentencing and treatment plans, such as those for prisoners who may have been diagnosed as drug addicts, mentally ill, psychopaths or sociopaths.

In this industry-focused curriculum, students can study the philosophy and goals underlying the correctional interventions, types of criminal sentencing and penal sanctions, including community-based corrections, institutional corrections and parole.

The corrections and case management specialization is designed to offer professionals in various areas of corrections and offender rehabilitation a deeper understanding of case management services and the complex dynamics of addiction and offender treatment. Graduates could be able to:

  • Explain and trace the history and philosophy of adult and juvenile correctional systems and identify the different models of punishment associated with each system.
  • Explain the history of probation and parole and the roles of the probation and parole officers in the criminal and juvenile correctional systems.
  • Define community corrections and the innovative approaches associated with this perspective such as restorative justice, peacemaking, intermediate sentences, drug courts and substance abuse counseling.
  • Apply various assessment, diagnostic techniques and case management strategies for working with adult and juvenile offenders.
  • Explain the organizational structure, administrative practices and operating procedures of correctional agencies in the handling of personnel and their functions.
