This Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ) degree program features a specialization in Homeland Security and Crisis Management and is designed for students wishing to pursue an interest in a fascinating field. The AIU BSCJ with a specialization in Homeland Security and Crisis Management is recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a part of the Emergency Management Higher Education Program. As stated on the FEMA website, the main goal of the FEMA Emergency Management Higher Education Program is “to work with colleges and universities, emergency management professionals, and stakeholder organizations to help create an emergency management system of sustained, replicable capability and disaster loss reduction through formal education, experiential learning, practice, and experience centered on mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery from the full range of natural, technological and intentional hazards which confront communities, States and the Nation.”

The Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice provides students with a broad based education in criminal justice studies. The curriculum is designed to give students an opportunity for professional education in the criminal justice field, with particular emphases in policing, courts, criminology, corrections, juvenile justice, homeland security and the field of forensic science. The homeland security and crisis management specialization allows students to study the intersection of stress and crisis management, ethical issues in the field, critical infrastructures, and terrorism and homeland security.

The homeland security & crisis management specialization helps prepare students with skills that are common to leadership roles in managing natural and man-made crises. In this curriculum, students can learn how to:

  • Apply foundational knowledge of homeland security & crisis management across a range of disciplines.
  • Conduct risk analysis and create emergency plans and strategic communications for homeland security & crisis management.
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of laws, national security and public policies governing homeland security and crisis management.
  • Apply research and analysis of homeland security & crisis management issues.
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of technology and critical infrastructure protection as they apply to homeland security & crisis management.
  • Apply key research areas on terrorism, counter-terrorism and natural disaster concepts of homeland security & crisis management through various scenarios.
  • Apply concepts of ethics and diversity as they relate to homeland security & crisis management.
