AIU London – About Our Community
London is the capital of the U.K. and the most populous city in the European Union (about 7.5 million in the city proper and a total of approximately 14 million when including the metropolitan area). In fact, if the London metropolitan area were a country, it would be the 13th largest economy in the world. More than 100 of Europe's 500 largest companies are headquartered in London, and the London foreign exchange market is the largest in the world, with an average daily turnover greater than the New York and Tokyo exchanges combined.
London produces 17 percent of the U.K.'s GDP and is one of the world's major business, political and cultural centers. It is also one of the "big four" fashion capitals (alongside Paris, New York, and Milan) and home to design houses Burberry, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood. Renowned department stores like Harrods and Harvey Nichols are also located here.
London also has a world-class theatre scene and some of the finest museums anywhere. In July 2005, London beat out Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
AIU London is located in Marylebone, an area in the City of Westminster within the larger city of London (London is made up of 32 such boroughs). It is a vibrant, stylish, diverse and colorful neighborhood. John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived here, as have Madonna and Guy Ritchie.
In Marylebone, you'll find a sense of community within the bigger city. Escape to nearby Regents Park (one of London's largest outdoor parks), or enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at any of the coffee shops and bakeries tucked into the neighborhood's back alleys. Head to the corner pub for trivia night, curl up in a plush chair at a tiny bookstore (you won't find a Borders or Barnes and Noble here), or walk to see a musical in the West End.
At AIU London, we believe the educational experience is enhanced when opportunities to pursue other interests are readily available. That's why we feel sure that you'll discover many satisfying ways our city and school can help you fulfill your personal, professional and academic pursuits.
