AIU London – Counseling Services

It is not uncommon for students to experience stress, anxiety, depression or home-sickness as they adjust to university life. AIU London provides a professional Counseling/Psychotherapy service for students with these conditions as well as those experiencing conditions such as low self-esteem, cross-cultural tension, relationship dilemmas, family problems, eating disorders, bereavement, alcohol/drug concerns and many other personal issues.

AIU Counselors/Therapists offer students the space and support to explore whatever issues are important to them. Sessions are private and confidential and free of charge. The Counseling Centre is on campus but is located away from classrooms and has a private entrance. With a student's permission, Counselors may interact with faculty and staff if the issues being discussed are impacting their capacity to effectively complete their studies. Therapeutic approaches and techniques Counselors may use include:

  • Time Management skills
  • Stress Management
  • "Third chair" work - a Psychodrama technique
  • Images/symbols and drawing therapy
  • Guided Visualizations — working through Unconscious material
  • Dis-Identification exercises — learning how to observe yourself and to be in a place of choice
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Students in need of counseling are invited to visit the Counseling Centre for an informal talk to assess their needs. The Counselors usually see students on a short-term basis. At times, just one initial assessment is all that is required to help or resolve a student's issues. Counselors may also make referrals to medical, psychological or psychiatric professionals.
