Military Admissions

AIU is serious about supporting you as you advance your education. As a DANTES-affiliated institution, AIU has established programs geared to the needs of active service members and veterans.

Military students wishing to enroll at AIU must first complete the application process. To be considered for admission, first-time students and transfer applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Submit a complete application for admission.
  • Submit attestation of high school graduation or its equivalent.
  • Participate in an admission interview arranged by an AIU Admission Advisor.
  • Prospective students whose native language is not English are required to provide proof of English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL or other English proficiency assessment) prior to admission or arrival.

Please refer to the AIU catalog for more information on submission requirements for Experiential Learning, Professional Training/Certification Credit, CLEP Examinations, DSST Examinations and Advanced Placement Examinations.

Three Steps to Help the Application Process Go Smoothly

Step 1- Schedule an appointment to speak with your Education Officer.

Be prepared to speak to your Education Services Officer about AIU and the reasons you would like to attend our online campus.

Be sure to discuss the following with your Education Services Officer:

  • AIU is regionally accredited through the Higher Learning Association and a member of the North Central Association
  • AIU is a Servicemen’s Opportunity College (SOC) Consortium member
  • AIU is a signatory of the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding for Post-Secondary Educational Institutions (DoD MOU)
  • AIU complies with all requirements of the President’s Executive Order “Establishing Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Serving Service Members, Spouses and Other Family Members”
  • Details about your Tuition TA Assistance paperwork, Top Up benefits eligibility and GI Bill benefits eligibility*

(All Army service members, visit GoArmyEd)

*To be eligible for the Top-up benefit, you must be approved for Tuition Assistance by a military department and be eligible for GI Bill Active Duty benefits. You must be a GI Bill Active Duty participant and must have served at least two full years on active duty.

Step 2 - Fill out a FAFSA application.

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and is an online service that helps determine your eligibility for various forms of financial aid. Visit our Financial Aid for Military Students page for more information. All students applying for college should fill out a FAFSA to help them determine their financial aid eligibility.

Step 3 - Contact your Financial Aid Advisor after you have completed your FAFSA.

Your AIU Financial Aid Advisor will work with you to help determine all military benefits for which you may be eligible.

The monthly military benefit paid to you is based on the type of degree you pursue, the length of your service, your category and whether the DoD put extra money in your GI Bill Fund (kickers).
