American InterContinental University is proud to announce that AIU London Interior Design student Margherita de Eccher recently took home first place in an Interior Educators (IE) competition.

The competition revolved around designing the schemes for a new facility for the Peverel Retirement company, with features that would be useful to an aging population. A shortlist of 12 entries was drawn by the company and The Launch Group PR agency from a field of about 50 entries. A final jury then selected five winning entries, with Eccher's taking top honors.

Reflecting on the judges comments, Interior Design Program Chair Mark Gower stated, "[Margherita's] thoughtful concept of an adaptable living space for the different stages of aging really impressed the judging panel."

"I found it very useful to have a class based on a competition where you have a real client, it makes it more realistic and the competition was the cherry on top," said Eccher, adding, "I usually think in a bigger scale on my projects, but this time it made more sense to me to try and focus on making the space change as the person grows."

Eccher has decided to donate her award to an orphanage in Madagascar that she visited over the winter. She hopes to increase the visibility of iniatives at the orphanage. More information can be found at the St. Damiam Non-Profit Association website.

Please join us in congratulating Margherita on her award and thanking her for her service to others, as well as a special thanks to Francesca Gernone, her instructor in her IDIA413 Universal Design course.
