The Worst Reasons to Choose a College – Part I

Without a doubt, all the time and energy that goes into selecting a college has a major impact on the trajectory of our lives. Choosing a college plays a large part in who you’ll meet, what you’ll study and where you’ll live. It’s not a decision to be made lightly. Yet even with all the information available to prospective students, so many make their final selections based on all the wrong reasons.
If you find yourself picking a school for any of these reasons, take a step back and rethink your decision:

It’s the most expensive so it has to be the best, right?
Wrong! Not only does tuition have no bearing on quality, it is also the biggest thing that can haunt students down the road. Don’t saddle yourself with enormous student debt if you don’t have to.

It’s the cheapest so I must be getting the best deal.
Again, don’t let financial factors alone determine where you’ll study. Think about the quality of the education and student life first.

Picking the school that offers the most scholarship* money seems to make sense, doesn’t it?
Once again, finances should never win the day, especially in regard to education. If money is a top-level concern, weigh your options carefully and understand the stipulations of the scholarships.

My admission is a lock so I better take it.
It’s understandable to feel compelled to go where you know you can get in. Don’t sell yourself short. Do your homework on other schools that you’re uncertain of and gain a sense of what they’re looking for, which is best done by analyzing current freshmen. And always apply to schools you’d like to attend because you never know.
