Participates in Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program to provide tuition, fees and housing allowances to veterans; AIU employees send care packages to deployed military students CHICAGO, July 02, 2009 – As the country prepares to celebrate its independence, American InterContinental University (AIU) announces its participation in a program that will support those who have worked to protect the freedoms enjoyed by Americans.
Obtaining a college degree requires hard work and dedication, and students who are also veterans or active members of the military face unique challenges as they work toward a degree. AIU understands how to support both veterans and active duty military and their families, from financial help to flexible learning options to providing the comforts of home when deployed.
AIU to Participate in the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program
AIU today announced that it will participate in the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program beginning Aug. 1 which offers tuition, fees and housing allowance benefits to eligible veterans.
Military veterans who choose to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at one of the AIU ground campuses or AIU Online will be eligible to have all or a portion of their tuition and fees paid for based on the amount of time they served and the state they reside in. Veterans who served an aggregate of three years of active duty or 30 continuous days for those who were honorably discharged for a service-connected disability after September 10, 2001 are eligible for the maximum basic benefit and will qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Ground campus students are also eligible for a monthly housing allowance.
“We are proud of the men and women who have served our country, and believe they deserve our support to get the education they need to be successful after they leave the military, “ said Stephen J. Tober, CEO of AIU and President of AIU Online. “At AIU we want to help as many eligible veterans as possible and are not limiting the number of veterans receiving matching contributions.”
Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) will pay tuition costs per credit hour and fees up to each state’s most expensive undergraduate tuition per credit hour and fees per term. Through the Yellow Ribbon Program, the VA and AIU will provide matching contributions for tuition and fees should a degree program exceed the Post-9/11 GI Bill cap for that state.
The AIU Houston and South Florida ground campuses will participate in the program at the maximum level, covering 100 percent tuition and fee costs for all degree programs for eligible veterans. The online campus will also fully fund all degree programs for qualified veterans. The Atlanta and London campuses will participate at a level that will allow veterans to attend the campus at a significantly reduced cost.
AIU Supports Active Military Students with Care Packages
In addition to special services and programs to support military veterans, AIU also supports active duty military. Recently, 50 American InterContinental University students deployed overseas in the U.S. military received a special greeting from their school when AIU employees mailed care packages to them.
“We want our deployed students to know we are always supporting them,” said Tober. “We are indebted to them for serving our country and thank them for ensuring our safety and protecting our freedom.”
The university’s WeCare group, an employee volunteer and philanthropy committee, spearheaded the care package drive. They raised funds to buy, assemble items and distribute the package to military students pursuing their education online at AIU while in the service. In total, about one-third of AIU students are military-related students.
Included in the care packages were supplies from a list of most-requested items, provided by the non-profit Operation Support Our Troops, from Naperville, Ill. The items included unisex hygiene products as well as food items.
