Get Started Early on Your Job Search
It’s never too early to start job searching. With the job market as competitive as it is, it’s important to do your preliminary work early. Preliminary work includes researching on desired positions and their qualifications, preparing for interviews, and getting an effective resume and cover letter together. All of these things are important elements that need to happen before you submit your application and apply. The Career Services department can help assist and guide you in the right direction, to help your job search go more smoothly and be effective.
You may ask “How do I get started?". The Career Services department’s resources can help with this task. Don’t wait till the last minute. With today’s economy, landing a job is taking longer than ever before, so start your job search earlier then you normally would. Do not wait until the end of your degree program. Contacting our department ahead of time will allow you to have a stellar resume and cover letter, just in time for you to graduate. Communicating openly with your Advisor and utilizing our job searching resources will allow you to hit the ground running.
Contact us! The Career Services department doesn’t always know what you need or want, so let us know if you do not understand something or if you are in need of additional assistance. Open communication is going to provide you with answers you need to expedite the assistance process. Conducting an effective job search will require you to commit time, so ensure that your time is being used effectively by contacting us early on in your academic career.
It is your responsibility, as an active job seeker, to look into the industry of your choice. Research networking sites online and industry specific organizations to join. If you don’t know where to start, conduct a simple Google search. If you are still unsure, contact your Advisor within Career Services for further assistance. We have many resources on certain industries, interviewing, resumes, cover letters, salary negotiations, links to organizations, and more. All of these resources are provided to help your search be more effective. Our department will expect you to look over and follow-up on resources we provide as soon as possible. Commit time to go over these resources and communicate any questions you may have to your Advisor.
Do not give up! A job search takes time and effort but by staying persistent things you will increase your chances of being effective.
