AIU Career Services: Don't Let Your Job Search Take a Vacation

July 6, 2011 Career Services 0 Comments

Sunshine, lemonade, barbeques, the pool…in lazy summer months it can be easy to let your mind wander away from focusing on your job search. While some may think that summer is a time that not many companies are hiring, this is not necessarily the case. A break in job searching is needed at times to recharge, relax, and reorganize, but don’t let the entire summer get away from you. Consider the following reasons and tips that summer can be an excellent time to be on the job hunt.

Build your network. More people always seem to be out and about in the summer.  Take a walk around the block, and get to know your neighbors if you haven’t already. You could have valuable contacts hidden right under your nose. Remember, about 75-95% of all job openings are not advertised in today’s market.

Stay positive and be persistent. If you don’t hear back after applying with a specific company, or after an interview, keep trying to follow up about once a week. The hiring manager or personnel you interviewed with may be on vacation. Be patient and leave polite messages.

Take advantage of summertime events such as family gatherings, block parties, cookouts, weddings, festivals, etc. These are great opportunities to talk to people you already know about your job search, and they also present the opportunity of meeting someone new who may have a connection to a company or job. You never know until you ask.

Keep in mind the industries in demand. Businesses such as resorts, hotels, restaurants, and amusement parks usually hire more staff, albeit sometimes temporary, for the summer months. This is another great way to make professional contacts and obtain some references for your resume. There is also always the possibility of the job being extended or even permanent employment if you perform at a high level consistently.
