As the world watched the aftermath of the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan‘s east coast, the WeCare committee quickly launched a successful fundraising campaign.

The committee reached out to all AIU Online sites, as well as the AIU ground campuses to raise a total of $1,982.90 for the Red Cross relief efforts. The Atlanta campus quickly sprang into action, hosting a bake sale that allowed them to raise several hundred dollars. The rest of the sites were able to collect all of their contributions from donations given by staff members.

According to the Red Cross‘s website, as of April 28, 2011, the American Red Cross has been able to contribute $133 million to the relief efforts in Japan. The money has provided support and supplies for nearly 2,000 evacuation shelters along the coast. There is also a plan set in place to provide 72,000 homes with electrical appliances to help displaced families get back on track.

If you were not able to donate, or would like to make another donation to the Red Cross Japan Relief efforts, please visit the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org. The quick response by the AIU community was outstanding, and the WeCare committee hopes to see this continue with the remainder of their initiatives in 2011.
