Ben Stein: Economist, Lawyer, Publisher...Commencement Speaker?

This week, American InterContinental University (AIU) announced that Ben Stein will give the commencement address at the AIU Graduation Ceremony at Navy Pier, Chicago, on July 28th.
Some may wonder, "why Ben Stein?" How does an actor in a classic 1980's comedy like Ferris Bueller's Day Off fit the bill for a serious, honored ceremony and celebration of education?
The real question is...how does he NOT fit the bill? While many people may have first come to know Mr. Stein from his famous part as "Economics Teacher" in Ferris, his past is actually tightly woven with higher education, academia, and law. In fact, his personal history reads much more like a tenured professor's than a former game-show host (although, he's spent his time in that arena as well.)
- Graduated with Honors in 1966 from Columbia University
- Graduated as Valedictorian in 1970 from Yale Law School
- Lawyer practicing poverty and trial law
- Staff speech writer for Presidents Nixon and Ford
- Wall Street Journal, L.A. Herald Examiner, and New York Magazine (among others) columnist
- Published 16 books, including seven novels and nine non-fiction books
With his background in economics and a storied career in law, politics and publishing, Mr. Stein is nothing if not eclectic. And now he adds "AIU Commencement Speaker" to his long list of life experiences.
So what should the AIU graduating class of 2012 expect from Mr. Stein during his commencement address? Probably a whole lot more than what they're expecting.
