On March 8, AIU London held their annual winter fashion show with a unique twist. The venue for the winter fashion show, titled ‘Flight,’ was so cool that it was positively glacial! ‘The Old Vic Tunnels’ in Waterloo are hidden from the uninvited gate-crasher or casual tourist by a rusty door that opens onto a cavernous, moodily lit warren of brick-built underground tunnels, arches and passageways where the muffled rumble of overhead trains serve to remind you that reality, as you know it, has been suspended for the duration of the show.
Low key lighting, a long runway lined with utilitarian benches and backlit through a blood red, diaphanous drape showcased garments from the 3D courses, Creative Drape, Design Process, Millinery and Textiles. The event was organised and staged by Fashion Show Production students who also were responsible for choosing the models, liaising with the professional hair and makeup team, the lighting team and of course, laying on the rather good refreshments.
The AIU London Fashion Department is committed in supporting a variety of charities. The school donated all proceeds from ticket sales for the show to FSSA (Funding for Secondary School Assistance) Zambia. This charity that was set up 15 years ago by Stephen Crabb and his wife to sponsor orphaned children who would otherwise be overlooked by the authorities and be further impoverished by their lack of education. From an initial six children who received sponsorship for education, to date, they now number in the thousands.
