The Fashion of the Steampunk Movement

May 10, 2012 Design 1 Comments

Steampunk fashion MovementAre those people into history? Or are they simply role-playing? You might ask yourself these questions if you ever see people wearing steampunk fashions, and the answer is some mix of both.

The steampunk movement is a mixture of history, fantasy, and science fiction that focuses on the Victorian era, when steam was the major source of power. Steampunk aficionados wear pseudo-Victorian clothing and often use antiquated forms of technology, acting as though they’re in a sci-fi alternate reality of Victorian times.

So why is fashion so important to the steampunk movement? Steampunk allows people to recall a more innocent time through their choice of clothing, and it certainly inspires some unique looks.

Steampunk Clothing. The clothing worn by steampunk fans is typically inspired by Victorian-era fashion, although there aren’t any set rules. Garments can range from formal to casual, and some of the common clothing items include:

  • Corsets
  • Bloomers
  • Petticoats
  • Vests
  • Old-fashioned suits and jackets
  • Driving coats

Steampunk Accessories. Many steampunk accessories simply have a Victorian style, but often accessories are decorated with gears, a large symbol of the movement. Some of the accessories you might see are:

  • Boots
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Aprons
  • Jewelry made from clock gears

It’s not clear whether steampunk will influence mainstream fashion in the near future, but you can always add some flair to your wardrobe with Victorian-esque accessories and garments.
