Four Reasons Why You Should Get an MBA

November 20, 2012 Business 0 Comments

Once certain individuals set their mind on a goal they need little in terms of a pep-talk to help solidify their choice in their own mind. Not everyone is fortunate enough to make up their mind so quickly, or for that matter so effectively. Other people need help making the final decision to purchase something, part with something, or to go after something.

Such is the case with some individuals when it comes to enhancing their education for the benefit of their career. The Master of Business Administration is one such advanced degree designed to help those in the business world boost their career aspirations to new heights. But that alone is not enough cause for some to enroll. Here are a few reasons one should get an MBA.

Not All Degrees Are Created Equal!

While an MBA can help you for effective leadership in today’s fast-paced business world, not all of the MBA degree programs out there are the same. When examining any MBA program, make sure the program is accredited by an accrediting body, such as The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ACBSP accreditation certifies that the teaching and learning processes of these programs within a business school meet rigorous educational standards. ACBSP is a leading specialized accreditation association for business education supporting, celebrating, and rewarding teaching excellence. Established in 1988, ACBSP is the only business accrediting organization for all associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree programs.

A degree in an accredited MBA program can be the differentiator in today’s competitive job market, so be sure to ask questions about accreditation when talking to any college or university.

Not Just for the World of Big Business

With so many CEOs and corporate leaders holding an MBA it is easy to assume that the world of big business and high-finance is the only place MBA graduates can be truly successful. Versatility is the name of the game in the 21st century though and MBA graduates can find a variety of opportunities to pursue upon graduation.

According to Monster.com, two of the most popular non-traditional career fields are healthcare and nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations, like their counterparts in the for-profit world, still concern themselves with good customer service and financial stability. Given the financial training MBA grads receive, they can be good candidates for leadership positions in the nonprofit world.

Healthcare is becoming increasingly complex, and MBA grads are seen as some of the best individuals to solve the complexities of the field. The management and organizational training MBA students receive is one of the top reasons they are finding more positions in healthcare administration.

Increased Salary Potential

One of the biggest reasons many consider returning to school to pursue an MBA is to increase the likelihood of promotion and, as a result, salary as well. According to Monster.com, graduates of full-time MBA programs may expect up to a 67% increase in their income after completing an MBA program. It is worth noting however that other factors come into play regarding salary. The company an individual works for, previous experience and the geographic area he or she resides in will all factor into salary potential.

Become a Leader the Industry Needs

The recent economic downturn has resulted in a sour public opinion regarding the image of corporate leaders across the country. According to Monster.com, this has given rise to MBA programs in recent years that seek to develop more ethically grounded and socially responsible MBA grads.

These new programs place a greater emphasis on ethical business practices, teaching students to operate and conduct business fairly. Additionally, as businesses and governments look to decrease their environmental footprint, MBA programs have adjusted to churn out graduates with knowledge of business approaches that are socially and environmentally conscious.

There are a myriad of reasons that business professionals should get an MBA, and not every reason will ring true with all students. However, the reasons listed above are among the best reasons for getting an MBA and enhancing a career.
