AIU Atlanta Cares Aids Shoes for Africa

September 6, 2011 AIU Atlanta, AIU Cares 0 Comments

AIU Atlanta Cares has embarked upon its first global initiative for the year, Shoes for Africa. We are collecting new and gently-worn shoes of every size, flats only, that will be shipped to Africa and distributed directly to children who may have never owned a pair. Shoes may seem like a mundane object, especially in an area where there is an abundance of other needs; however, shoes are vital for health.

On the website, Yes Incorporated!, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that an estimated one billion people a year are infected with debilitating and, for some, life threatening parasitic diseases from walking in contaminated soil or water. Also, many schools in Africa require the students to wear shoes, a requirement that blocks many students from attendance. Education provides an avenue of escape from dire poverty. By providing shoes we help many take the first steps toward reaching this goal, one step, one student at a time.
