General Info

If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to show that you’re proficient in English before you’re admitted to AIU. You can do that by submitting either test scores or proof that you’ve completed certain coursework.

Undergraduate Students

Exam Options

Any of the following test scores may be used to show your English proficiency:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • Paper Test: 500 or higher
  • Computer Test: 173 or higher
  • Internet Test: 61 or higher

APIEL (AP International English Language)

  • 3 or higher

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • 5.5 or higher

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)

  • 73 or higher

UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate)

  • Grade of A, B, or C for Certificate of Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English, or

British GCSE/O-Level, A-Level, and AS-Level Examinations

  • Grade of A, B or C in the subject of English

Options Based on Past Coursework
You can also demonstrate English proficiency by:

  • Completing a college-level English course with a grade of C or better at an accredited, English-speaking, post-secondary institution
  • Graduating from an English-speaking secondary institution
  • Completing ESL instruction based on University evaluation
  • Completing Level 109 or higher on the ESL Language Centers
  • Completing Level 107 or higher EF Language Centers

Graduate Students

Exam Options

Any of the following test scores may be used to show your English proficiency:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • • Computer Test: 213 or higher
  • • Internet Test: 79 or higher

APIEL (AP International English Language

  • 4 or higher

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • 7 or higher

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)

  • 80 or higher

UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate)

  • Grade of A, B, or C for Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

If you attended an English-speaking undergraduate program, there’s no need to be retested. See the coursework options below.

Options Based on Past Coursework
You can also demonstrate English proficiency by:

  • Completing a college-level English course with a grade of C or better at an accredited, English-speaking, post-secondary institution
  • Graduating from an English-speaking postsecondary institution
  • Graduation from an English speaking secondary institution
  • Completing ESL instruction based on University evaluation
  • Completing Level 112 or higher on the ESL Language Centers
  • Completing Level 108 or higher EF Language Centers
