Friends and family of over 400 AIU graduates nearly filled the 4,600 seat Atlantic Civic Center to watch the biannual AIU Atlanta
commencement ceremony. President Peter C. Correa led the processional of academia hierarchy, faculty and staff members followed by graduates from the AA, BA/BS and MBA programs.
Introduced by chancellor Dr. George Miller, Dr. Robert L. Hampton, vice president of academic affairs, gave the keynote address titled, "Parting Words." His remarks centered on the importance of education and quoted our 35th U.S. President, John F. Kennedy:
"Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation."
Pointing out the significance of higher education, Dr. Hampton said, "higher education is a privilege not a right. Education is the cornerstone of every civilization. Using the analogy to basketball, his parting words were, "focus on what matters and make every shot count."
Terrell Carlton, president of the student government association, introduced the student speaker, Brandy Stanart, an AIU Online student graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. The mother of two, Ms. Stanart stated she was the first in her family to receive a bachelor’s degree. Her message focused on the importance of developing learning tools to use in life. In referring to her degree, she said, "it’s not about how smart I am, but in how I use these tools." Addressing her fellow graduates, she said, "use the tools you learn to unlock doors."
After all the graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas and personal handshake from President Correa, the program ended with the traditional recessional and student cheers. The next commencement ceremony will take place on October 21, 2011.
