We interviewed Director of Student Management and Ombudsman Jamie Mike, one of AIU Houston's longest-serving employees and one whose valuable contributions are often accomplished behind the scenes with little fanfare. Those of us who know Jamie, however, can attest to her dedication and skill in working with students, faculty, and staff while maintaining a cheerful demeanor and a contagious smile.
Some people may be unclear what “Director of Student Management and Ombudsman” actually means. Could you explain what your job involves?
I serve two functions within the University. As Director of Student Management, I monitor the students’ enrollment process to help ensure the student receives the support needed to successfully begin classes and assimilate within the University. As Ombudsman, I guide students through the University’s Grievance Procedure. Further, I address students’ inquiries and function as a liaison between the student and the University’s departments.
What are the most challenging—and the most rewarding—aspects of your work?
I’m most challenged by my own tendency to expect quick fixes to problems. I don’t like to see a student wait for solutions, and I don’t like recurring issues.
The most rewarding aspects of my work are helping students become successful in their courses and helping to facilitate solutions. I truly appreciate the student-focused environment of AIU Houston. We have a great team of professionals.
How long have you been with AIU Houston and what did you do before you came here?
I have been employed with AIU since March 2004. Prior to that, I was the Gallery Manager at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Before moving to Texas, I served eleven years as a child welfare worker and supervisor with the state of Ohio.
Tell us about your hobbies, interests, and what you like to do off the job.
Off the job, I enjoy spending time with my granddaughter, Hannah, and a special guy named John. I enjoy reading mysteries and historical novels. Ballroom dancing is a passion infrequently enjoyed these days. I also pump iron!
Finish this sentence: One thing nobody knows about me is…
I am the sticky note queen…..They are all over my condo. Perhaps I am a bit obsessive about not forgetting things.
Thanks to Jamie for her dedication to our students, and to David Drake, Director of Library Services, for this interview.
