In November and December of 2011, the AIU Online Admissions Military Division invoked the spirit of the United States Marine Corps Reserve by participating in Toys for Tots and raising funds for donations to the organization. Leading the way, the Military Advisory Committee (MAC) exceeded their donation goal of $1000 through jeans days and silent auctions.
The event did not just end there, continuing through the spirit of giving. The Military Division invited several honored guests to a special gift giving ceremony and shared a celebratory cake. The mission of this charitable fundraiser was accomplished through the hard work of the Military Division leadership and MAC members.
Toys for Tots
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
Toys for tots began in 1947, when a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children.
In 1948, Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo, which is still used today.
From 1947 through 1979, Marines collected and distributed new and used toys. From Christmas 1980 through the present, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys.
Over the 62 years of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, Marines have distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children.
