If it’s been taking you awhile to find a new position, you may feel like you are at the point where you will accept anything. However, no matter how desperate you may feel , don’t ignore your inner voice if it’s telling you to be uncomfortable about a position that is offered to you. Sometimes, it’s better for you and your career to reject a job offer. Watch out for the following warning signs that a position may not be the right one for you.
1. The ad is misleading. The ad says the company is hiring for a manager position, but when you get to the interview, you discover they are really looking for a salesperson, and there is a long list of extra responsibilities that was not mentioned in the job posting. Legitimate companies with solid reputations do not have to lie about their openings in order to find candidates.
2. You have to pay the company money to start the position. Remember, you are working to earn money – it shouldn’t be the other way around! Jobs that are not scams will not ask you to pay a fee to get started.
3. The same position is frequently advertised. If you notice a company is constantly running the same ad for a position, chances are it’s because the turnover rate is high – and there are likely some good reasons as to why that is! Use your professional network to see if anyone has insight into the company’s practices and work environment.
4. Communication from the company is unprofessional. Are there spelling and grammar errors in the emails they send you? Have they asked you multiple times to reschedule your interview? Are they impolite when speaking with you over the phone? As a candidate, you should expect to be treated with respect and common courtesy; anything else should certainly be taken as a red flag.
5. You find a wealth of negative information about the company while doing research. The Internet makes it easy to research a company, so do a Google search. While you do have to take what you find with a grain of salt, if you’re finding more negative information than positive, you may want to run the other way.
6. The company makes big promises. Six-figure salaries and fast career progression with no experience required, all while working from home – like the old saying goes, if it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
7. They offer you the position after the first interview. While the idea of this happening may sound great, you have to ask yourself why they are so desperate to hire someone on the spot. Do they hire everyone they interview? Was the decision made before you even got there? Remember, it is okay to ask the interviewer for some time to think about it before accepting the offer.
