Some universities offer pathways that do not require GMAT scores for admission, often by using alternative ways to evaluate academic readiness.

This blog outlines the role standardized tests can play in MBA admissions and describes an assessment-based option that may be used in place of the GMAT at certain institutions.

The Role of Testing

Graduate business programs sometimes use standardized tests such as the GMAT as one factor in admissions decisions. In general, these exams are designed to assess skills commonly associated with graduate-level business study, such as analytical writing, quantitative reasoning and critical thinking.

Even when a test score is included in an application, it is typically one component among several. Programs may also review prior academic history, prerequisite coursework and other indicators of preparation for advanced study.

Foundational Assessments

In some cases, programs use assessments or preparatory modules to evaluate foundational knowledge in key business subject areas. This type of approach may focus less on a single score and more on identifying strengths and gaps across core topics.

Moving Beyond Standardized Testing

An assessment-based approach differs from standardized testing in what it emphasizes. Rather than producing a single score intended for broad comparison, an assessment may be used to highlight topic-level readiness across multiple areas of business study.

Depending on the institution and the learner’s academic background, this type of assessment may be required for some applicants and optional for others. It may also be completed online, which may make it easier to fit into a graduate admissions timeline.

Next Step

Learn how AIU’s MBA program may support your graduate educational goals, including options that can help you demonstrate readiness without relying solely on standardized test scores.

Even with a solid routine, there may be times when home access is not available, or when studying needs to happen between other commitments.

Having a backup plan may help make those disruptions easier to manage. If a device needs repair, a home connection goes down, or travel changes your setup, it often helps to have a few nearby options where computer access and Wi-Fi are available. The locations below offer a starting point for identifying dependable places in your area.

1. A Friend or Family Member’s Home

A trusted friend or family member may be able to offer a quiet space and a stable connection for a short period. This can also be a helpful option when a home setup is temporarily unavailable.

2. Public Libraries

Many public libraries provide free Wi-Fi and on-site computer access. Policies can vary by location, including time limits, guest access and whether reservations are required. Hours can also differ throughout the week, so checking schedules in advance may reduce last-minute surprises.

3. Community Centers

Some community centers offer computer labs or public Wi-Fi access, particularly in larger communities. Access rules and availability can differ, so confirming guest policies, hours and any usage limits ahead of time may be useful.

4. Cafes and Restaurants With Wi-Fi

Coffee shops and restaurants often provide Wi-Fi that can support basic course tasks such as reading, submitting assignments, or joining discussion boards. Network details are sometimes posted in-store or shared upon request.

Because public networks are not always encrypted, it may be useful to avoid accessing sensitive accounts on open Wi-Fi. A personal hotspot or a virtual private network (VPN) may add an extra layer of protection, depending on your device and settings.

5. Hotels and Lodging Common Areas

Hotels sometimes provide guest Wi-Fi, and some locations may also offer lobby access. Certain properties geared toward business travelers may include shared business centers with computers and printing access, though availability varies by location.

6. Fitness Centers with Guest Internet

Some fitness centers provide Wi-Fi for members and guests. Connection quality can vary, especially when many people are streaming content at the same time, so this option may be more reliable during less busy hours.

Explore AIU’s online degree programs to find flexible learning options that can help you keep coursework moving wherever your schedule takes you.

While there is no single formula, certain habits tend to help support steady progress through coursework and help keep academic goals clear over time as you work toward a degree.

Below are ways to build a realistic study approach by considering how you learn best, where study time fits, when to seek clarification, and how to stay connected to your academic goals.

Understand Your Learning Preferences and Strengths

Students often learn and retain information in different ways. Some people focus best early in the day, while others concentrate more effectively at night. Some prefer consistent daily progress, while others may use longer blocks of time for reading, research, or writing.

Clarifying these patterns may make it easier to plan study time in a realistic way. For example, a routine might include a short writing session each day or a longer, distraction-limited block on a weekend, depending on what feels sustainable for you.

Plan Around a Schedule

A clear view of weekly obligations can reveal where study time realistically fits. Writing down recurring commitments may help identify small, usable time windows for reviewing notes, completing readings, or outlining assignments.

Planning also matters when the schedule changes, because of things such as travel, increased family responsibilities, or periods of heavier professional commitments. Building in extra time ahead of deadlines may reduce last-minute pressure and keep course tasks more manageable.

Ask Questions and Communicate Early

Reaching out to instructors can support learning, especially when expectations or course material feel unclear.

Questions about assignments, feedback, and course concepts can also confirm that the time spent studying aligns with course requirements.

It may also help to note the communication options available, such as office hours, course messaging tools, or email, and to use them early when clarification is needed.

Stay Connected to Academic Goals

Degree programs often connect to personal goals that vary by student. That purpose might relate to advancing academic plans, building knowledge in a subject area, or completing a long-term educational objective.

On difficult weeks, revisiting that purpose may help maintain focus. Some students may keep a written reminder in a visible place, while others may talk through educational goals with supportive people in their lives.

Prioritize

Competing priorities can make it difficult to complete assignments on time, particularly during busy periods. Time management often involves trade-offs, such as reducing optional activities temporarily to protect study time.

A realistic approach includes setting expectations for what can be completed in a week, breaking larger tasks into smaller steps, and using a consistent routine that supports steady progress throughout a course.

Explore AIU online degree programs to find an option that fits your educational goals, schedule, and learning preferences.

An approach to instruction often reflects experience, core beliefs about learning, and personal strengths in the classroom. Over time, many educators refine their style by trying new strategies, reflecting on evidence-based practices that support learning, and adjusting to different student needs.

The five teaching styles below are broad portraits of common classroom approaches. Each one highlights a different mix of strengths, habits, and priorities that may show up in teaching. Educators may see themselves in one result, several results, or different results at different points in their careers.

Style 1: The Cheerleader

This style reflects a teacher who brings enthusiasm to classroom life and often takes part in activities beyond daily lessons. Encouragement and recognition are central themes, with a focus on helping students feel seen for effort and growth as well as academic progress. In this approach, celebrating milestones may be one way to reinforce motivation and classroom community.

Style 2: The Tough-Love Teacher

This style emphasizes challenge, structure, and high expectations. The focus is often placed on persistence and the learning process, not only final performance. Clear standards and consistent follow-through tend to be key elements, with attention to helping students stretch their skills over time.

Style 3: The Inspirer

This style reflects an educator who brings visible passion for learning and models curiosity. Instruction often highlights big-picture purpose, personal growth, and continued learning. Motivation may come through storytelling, sharing ideas, and connecting course topics to meaningful questions that invite students to think beyond basic requirements.

Style 4: The Unconventional Teacher

This style centers on creativity and experimentation in learning activities. Lessons may include novel formats, flexible projects, or alternative ways to practice and demonstrate understanding. The goal is often to make content feel engaging and to offer multiple pathways for students to connect with the material.

Style 5: The Pal

This style highlights relationship-building and rapport. The educator prioritizes knowing students as individuals and uses that connection to support participation and classroom culture. A strong classroom relationship may help set the tone for communication, accountability, and collaboration.

Developing a teaching style can be compared to building a personal toolbox: different techniques fit different contexts, learners, and subject areas.

When enrollment changes, financial aid may change as well, depending on the type of funding awarded and the school’s policies..

Part-time status may affect aid in several ways, including award amounts, eligibility thresholds, and when repayment begins. The sections below outline common considerations for federal grants, scholarships, and federal student loans.

Federal Grants

Federal grants, unlike loans, generally do not have to be repaid, although a student may have to repay part or all of a grant in certain circumstances. For example, repayment may be required if a student withdraws from school early. Federal grants, such as the Pell Grant, are based on financial need and award amounts are dependent upon several factors including enrollment status.1

Scholarships

Scholarship eligibility requirements vary by scholarship. Students should review each scholarship’s requirements before applying. A college’s financial aid office may offer scholarships specific to that college.

Federal Student Loans

Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans require students to be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible. Schools determine which loan types students qualify for and how much they can borrow based on financial need, cost of attendance, and any other financial aid received. These loans also have borrowing limits that depend on factors such as year in school and dependency status. 2

Loan Interest

Interest is a major difference between Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. Direct Subsidized Loans do not charge interest while a student is enrolled at least half-time in school or during the six-month grace period. Direct Unsubsidized Loans begin accumulating interest from the date of the first loan disbursement. 2

Repayment Timing and Enrollment Changes

For most federal student loans, repayment begins six months after a student graduates, leaves school, or drops below half-time enrollment. Most federal loans have a grace period, and for most loans, interest continues to grow during that grace period. 3

Coordinating with Your School and Program

Because policies and timelines vary by institution and individual situation, a financial aid office can explain how part-time enrollment affects current awards, future eligibility, and repayment timing.

Explore online degree programs to find an option that fits your schedule, and talk with the school about how part-time enrollment could affect your financial aid eligibility and timeline.

New tools, platforms and breakthroughs seem to appear almost daily.

But for Mohammad Azam, AI/ML Instructor at AIU, the foundation of the field is not just technical skill. It is the ability to think critically, solve problems thoughtfully, and build systems that can adapt and grow over time.

That focus on clarity, structure, and critical thinking continues to shape the way he approaches both technology and teaching.

Beyond the AI Hype

AI is often discussed as a replacement for human thinking. Mohammad sees it differently.

He views AI as a powerful tool that can help automate tasks, speed up workflows, and generate ideas while still depending on human judgment and decision-making.

Another misconception, he says, is that success in the field comes down to mastering every new framework or technology that appears.

In reality, the tools continue to evolve quickly. What matters more is understanding how to think through problems, design systems, and adapt over time.

That focus on fundamentals shapes the way Mohammad approaches his courses. Rather than focusing only on memorization or technical complexity, he encourages students to better understand how systems work, how decisions are made, and how technical concepts may apply in real-world environments.

Learning Through Teaching

For Mohammad, teaching became a way to better understand complex ideas himself.

The process of explaining technical concepts to others pushed him to slow down, think more clearly, and approach problems with greater intention. That experience eventually led him deeper into software architecture, AI, and machine learning, along with writing articles that break down technical topics in more accessible ways.

Today, that same mindset continues to influence how he teaches.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and approach problems with clarity and intention rather than rushing toward answers.

Focus Beyond the Screen

Outside the classroom, Mohammad spends time hiking snowy mountain trails, often traveling to Colorado during winter.

He describes hiking on ice as an exercise in focus and awareness. Every step requires patience, attention, and careful thinking.

That slower, more intentional mindset carries into other parts of his life as well. He also enjoys long walks without distractions and listens to software engineering podcasts during daily swim laps.

For Mohammad, those routines help create the space needed to reflect, reset, and approach challenges with greater clarity.

What This Means for Students

Still, combining coursework with a paid role can offer practical advantages that may help support academic progress and personal development.

Below are five potential benefits to consider.

Greater Financial Stability

A paid role may help support day-to-day expenses and longer-term financial planning while you are in school. For some learners, that added stability may help reduce stress and support focus on coursework and steady study habits.

More Opportunities to Apply Classroom Learning

When professional responsibilities connect to your subject area, it may be easier to notice how concepts translate beyond the classroom. Even when tasks are not directly related, real-world environments can provide context for communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Staying Current in Your Field

Remaining active in a professional setting while enrolled may make it easier to keep up with changes in your field, including terminology, tools, and everyday practices. It may also create natural opportunities to connect with others who share similar interests, which can be helpful as your academic focus evolves.

Stronger Time-Management and Prioritization Skills

Managing school alongside other responsibilities often requires clearer planning and more intentional use of time. Over time, learners may develop routines for scheduling readings, assignments, and personal obligations in a way that may help support steady progress through a term.

A Stronger Personal Support System

Balancing multiple obligations can bring high-pressure weeks, especially during exams or major projects. A supportive network may help create a meaningful difference. This may include family, friends, classmates, mentors, or others who understand the demands of returning to school.

Sharing goals with encouraging people and setting boundaries around distractions may help support a more stable environment for learning and persistence.

Explore online degree programs to find an option that may help support your long-term academic goals and fit your schedule

They differ in focus, oversight, and common qualification elements.

In many cases, choosing between the CMA and CPA relates to whether someone prefers external reporting and public-facing accounting functions or internal analysis and organizational decision support. Some individuals pursue both credentials over time, depending on academic background and long-term direction within the field.

CPA (Certified Public Accountant)

The CPA credential is commonly associated with public accounting and external-facing services such as auditing, taxation, and financial reporting. Requirements are set at the state level in the US, so the specific details vary by jurisdiction.

Credential Elements and Typical Requirements1

▶ Examination

All candidates must pass the Uniform CPA Examination® (CPA Exam), a four-section, 16-hour assessment. The exam includes three four-hour Core sections and one four-hour Discipline section of the candidate’s choice. The Core sections are Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), and Taxation and Regulation (REG). The Discipline sections are Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Control (ISC), and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP).

▶ Education

CPA licensure includes education requirements. Because requirements other than the CPA Exam may differ by jurisdiction, candidates should check with their specific Board of Accountancy for details.

▶ Experience

CPA licensure includes experience requirements. Because requirements other than the CPA Exam may differ by jurisdiction, candidates should check with their specific Board of Accountancy for details.

CMA (Certified Management Accountant)

The CMA credential is generally aligned with management accounting and internal financial decision support within organizations. The subject matter often emphasizes planning, performance management, and analytical approaches that support internal stakeholders.

Credential Elements and Typical Requirements2

CMA requirements are set by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA®),rather than by state licensing boards. Current IMA FAQ information identifies the following requirements to earn CMA certification.

▶ Membership

Candidates must have active membership in IMA.

▶ Education

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or a related professional certification.

▶ Professional Experience

Candidates must complete two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. IMA states that this requirement may be completed before passing the exam or within seven years after passing it.

▶ Examination

Candidates must pass Parts 1 and 2 of the CMA exam.

At the same time, a long pause between terms can make it harder to regain momentum once classes resume. A small amount of low-pressure academic time over the break may help maintain a connection to course routines without taking away from rest.

Below are five ideas that can support continued learning between sessions.

A Light Preview of the Next Session’s Coursework

If the next class is already known, a light preview may make the first week feel more familiar. This might include reviewing key terms, skimming an overview article, or revisiting notes from a related course. Keeping the research general can be a useful way to prepare without turning the break into a full study sprint.

Exploration of a Topic Outside the Current Program

Winter break may be a good time to follow an academic interest that does not fit neatly into a current course plan. Short lectures, introductory tutorials, and beginner-friendly articles can provide a foundation in a new subject area. The goal should be simple exposure, not mastery.

Enjoyment-Focused Reading to Stay Mentally Engaged

Academic reading often centers on assignments and assessments. Leisure reading offers a different pace while still supporting comprehension, vocabulary, and focus. A mix of fiction and nonfiction, shorter essays, or a single book over the break can keep reading habits active between terms.

A Local Learning Day

For those who prefer hands-on learning, a “local learning day” may fit well into the break. Libraries, museums, and community cultural events can offer informal educational experiences. Many communities also offer free public programs, exhibits, and talks that connect to history, art, science, or civic life.

Organize Your Study System

Instead of adding more studying, it may be useful to spend a small amount of time organizing learning tools and routines. This may include cleaning up digital files, creating folders for the next session, updating a calendar with key dates, or setting up a simple weekly routine for reading and note review. A lighter reset like this can support a smoother transition back into coursework when the term begins.

Winter break may be primarily a time for rest, family, and personal priorities. Even so, one or two of the approaches above may help keep academic habits familiar, making the return to classes feel more manageable.

Explore AIU’s online degree programs to find an option that aligns with your academic goals and learn how to take the next step toward your education.

The title fits. The description sounds familiar. Your finger is hovering over the "Apply" button.

Before you click, slow down. A few targeted questions asked before you apply can help save you time, sharpen your focus, and help you put your strongest application forward. And if the answers reveal some gaps, that is useful information too.

Here is what to ask yourself before submitting your next application.

1. Can You Actually Do This Job?

Read the job description carefully. Not just the title. The full description.

Do the day-to-day responsibilities make sense to you? Do you recognize the tools, systems, or skills being referenced? If the role feels like a natural extension of what you already do or have studied, that is a strong signal. If the description reads like a foreign language, this may not be the right opportunity right now.

2. Are You Underqualified, and Does That Matter?

Meeting every single requirement on a job posting is rare. Employers often expect some growth on the job. A candidate who meets most of the requirements and demonstrates clear potential can be a stronger hire than someone who checks every box but brings little room to develop.

That said, if you find yourself consistently falling short of the qualifications for roles you want, that is worth paying attention to. It may signal that additional education or skill development could help you become a more competitive candidate over time.

3. Are You Overqualified?

Being overqualified is a real consideration. Some employers worry that a highly experienced candidate will become disengaged quickly or leave as soon as something better comes along.

If you are applying for a role where your background significantly exceeds the requirements, your cover letter is your opportunity to address this directly. Explain why this specific role appeals to you. Be specific. Genuine enthusiasm, clearly expressed, can go a long way toward easing an employer's concerns.

4. Do You Know the Difference Between Required and Preferred Qualifications?

Most job postings separate requirements from preferences. Required qualifications are the baseline. Preferred qualifications are the nice-to-haves.

Focus your self-assessment on the required skills first. If you meet those, the preferred qualifications should not stop you from applying. Candidates who meet all the preferred qualifications may be reviewed first, but that does not mean they are the best fit.

If the preferred qualifications describe skills you could realistically develop, note that. Some employers value a candidate's capacity to grow into a role as much as their existing credentials.

5. Does Your Resume Reflect This Specific Role?

A strong resume is not a static document. It is a tailored argument for why you are the right person for a specific position.

Before you apply, review your resume against the job description. Does it highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to this role? Does it use language that mirrors the posting? If not, take the time to revise it before submitting.

A resume that speaks directly to the role you are applying for can outperform a generic one, even if the underlying experience is similar.

When the Job Search Reveals a Skills Gap

Sometimes the process of searching for jobs surfaces something important: the roles you want require skills or credentials you do not yet have.

That is not a dead end. It is a starting point.

Going back to school to build new skills or complete a degree can help make you a more competitive candidate in your field. AIU offers more than 30 online degree programs and concentrations across business, information technology, criminal justice, healthcare management, and education, designed specifically for working adults who need flexibility.
If you are drawn to understanding how organizations run, how products move from production to delivery, and how businesses keep their operations efficient, a degree in operations management may be worth exploring. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a specialization in Operations Management at AIU is designed to help students study the foundational principles of how organizations design, manage, and improve their productive processes.

Whether you are considering a career change, returning to school after time away, or pursuing a degree for the first time, understanding what this program covers and what potential career paths it may relate to can help you make a more informed decision about your next step.

What Does Operations Management Cover?

Operations management sits at the intersection of business strategy, logistics, and process improvement. It focuses on how organizations produce goods and deliver services, and how those processes can be designed and refined over time.

At AIU, the BBA in Operations Management is built on a core business foundation combined with specialized coursework designed to explore these concepts in depth.

Specialized courses in the program include:

Cost Control Management: Covers materials management challenges, benchmarking, inventory control and management, production processes, lean manufacturing, and waste in manufacturing.

Production Planning and Quality Management: Focuses on forecasting aggregate production planning, capacity planning, materials requirement planning, scheduling, and modern approaches to designing manufacturing and service systems.

Supply Chain Management and Purchasing: Explores supply chain economics, e-procurement, logistics management, global supply chain issues, vendor selection, and management of supply chain performance.

Global Operations Management: Covers critical path methods, PERT charts, resource allocations, Gantt charts, budgeted project cost and scheduling, and the management of production and service delivery processes.

Strategic Manufacturing Policy: Examines how organizations align resources and operating procedures with their strategic plans, including implementing change across supply chain functions.

The program also includes core business courses in areas such as financial management, management information systems, managerial accounting, and principles of marketing, providing a broad business foundation alongside the operations-specific curriculum.

The BBA in Operations Management at AIU is programmatically accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). This programmatic accreditation reflects a commitment to quality in business education.

Potential Career Paths for a BBA in Operations Management

A BBA in Operations Management may be relevant to a range of roles across business and industry. Career paths can vary based on experience, location, employer requirements, and additional qualifications.

The following are examples of roles that may be possible with a BBA in Operations Management1:

General and Operations Manager: Oversees the daily operations of an organization, coordinating resources, managing staff, and ensuring that production or service goals are met efficiently.

Supply Chain Manager: Directs and coordinates supply chain functions, including procurement, logistics, inventory management, and distribution, to support organizational goals.

Industrial Production Manager: Oversees manufacturing or production processes, balancing labor, materials, and equipment to meet output targets and quality standards.

Management Analyst: Evaluates organizational processes and recommends improvements to help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively.

Business Operations Specialist: Supports the operational functions of an organization, often working across departments to analyze processes, coordinate activities, and address operational challenges.

These roles reflect a range of responsibilities that align with the skills and knowledge areas covered in an operations management curriculum. Requirements vary by employer, position, and location.

How AIU Structures the Learning Experience

AIU's BBA in Operations Management is available online, as well as at AIU's Atlanta and Houston campuses, offering flexibility for students managing work, family, and other commitments. AIU offers online degree programs so students can engage with coursework on a schedule that fits their lives.

AIU's intellipath adaptive learning platform is designed to personalize the learning experience based on what students already know. Rather than spending time reviewing familiar material, intellipath helps focus attention on the concepts that still need development, making study time more efficient.

Students also have access to career service resources designed to support resume development, interview preparation, and job search strategies, available to both current students and alumni at no additional fee.

Is This Program a Fit for Your Academic Goals?

If you are interested in how organizations function, how processes are designed and improved, and how businesses manage the flow of goods and services, the BBA in Operations Management may align with your academic interests.

A few questions worth thinking through before you apply:

Are you interested in how businesses manage production, logistics, or supply chains?

Do you want a business degree that goes beyond general management to explore operational processes in depth?

Are you looking for a program you can pursue online, on campus, or both?

If these questions resonate, exploring the full program details is a good next step.
It is one of the most common interview questions, and one of the most dreaded. Talking about your strengths feels natural enough, but discussing your weaknesses? That is where many job seekers freeze up.

Here is the good news: this question does not have to be a stumbling block. With the right approach, it can actually be one of the more memorable parts of your interview.

Talking About Your Strengths

At first glance, discussing your strengths seems like the easier half of this question. In practice, many candidates still struggle with it.

Generic answers like "I am a team player," "I am great at multitasking," or "I communicate well," are common for a reason. They sound good. But they also sound like everyone else.

What separates a strong answer from a forgettable one is specificity. Rather than simply naming a strength, briefly illustrate it with an example from your experience. If you describe yourself as a team player, follow it with a short story about a time you helped a group meet a deadline or navigated a challenge. That context gives your answer credibility and makes it stick.

Think of your "strengths" answer as a brief argument, not a list. Each strength you name should be supported by something concrete from your background.

Talking About Your Weaknesses

This is where the question gets more nuanced, and where a lot of well-intentioned advice falls short.

You may have heard the suggestion to describe a weakness that is really a strength in disguise. Something like, "I tend to work too hard and stay late to finish projects." The thinking is that it sounds humble while actually presenting a positive trait.

Most experienced interviewers see through this approach immediately. More importantly, it does not actually answer what they are asking. Interviewers raise this question because they want to understand your self-awareness and your capacity for growth, not because they expect you to be perfect.

A more effective strategy is to identify a genuine, skill-based weakness and then describe what you are actively doing to address it. This approach accomplishes two things at once. It shows that you can honestly assess your own development areas, and it demonstrates that you take initiative to improve.

For example, if public speaking is an area you are working to strengthen, you might mention that you have been seeking opportunities to present in team meetings or have enrolled in a course to build that skill. That kind of answer is honest, specific, and forward-looking.

One important boundary: avoid naming a weakness that is central to the core function of the role you are applying for. If the position requires strong analytical skills, that is not the weakness to highlight in this interview.

Why Skill-Based Weaknesses Work Best

Skill-based weaknesses are the most useful to discuss because they are actionable. You can take a course, attend a workshop, seek out a mentor, or practice deliberately. That gives you something concrete to say about what you are doing to grow.

Personality-based weaknesses, by contrast, are harder to demonstrate progress on and can leave an interviewer uncertain about whether the issue is something you are genuinely working to change.

When you frame your weakness as a skill you are actively developing, you shift the conversation from a liability to a story about growth. That is a much stronger position to be in.

The Bottom Line

This question does not have to instill fear. Handled well, your answer to the strengths and weaknesses question can be one of the more compelling moments of your interview. It is an opportunity to show that you know yourself, that you are honest, and that you are the kind of person who takes ownership of your own development.

Prepare your answer in advance, keep it specific, and focus on what you are doing to keep improving. That combination is hard to forget.

An elevator pitch is a sixty- to ninety-second, conversational summary of who you are as a professional. It is designed to communicate your experience, skills, and goals clearly and confidently, in the time it might take to ride an elevator with someone. The name is informal, but the skill is genuinely useful.

What Should an Elevator Pitch Cover?

A strong elevator pitch answers a handful of core questions in a natural, flowing way. Think of it as a brief professional introduction, not a rehearsed monologue.

Here are the key questions your pitch should address:

Who are you? Start with your professional identity, not just your job title.

What are your skills? Name two or three specific, relevant competencies.

What is your experience? Give a brief sense of your background and how long you have been working in your field.

What have you accomplished? Mention one concrete example that illustrates your value.

What is your unique strength? Identify what sets you apart from others with similar backgrounds.

What are you looking for? Be clear about your goal, whether that is a new role, a connection, or simply a conversation.

What do you want to achieve? Ask for something specific. End with a direct question or request. It keeps the conversation moving and shows confidence.

Putting It Together: A Practical Example

To see how these elements come together, consider this scenario.

You have two years of experience in customer service and are looking to move into a supervisory role. At a professional conference, you meet a director at a large telecommunications company that hires for exactly that kind of position. You have about sixty seconds. What do you say?

Here are two versions of a pitch for this situation.

Pitch One

Hello, my name is Olivia Wyatt, and I am a customer service specialist with more than two years of experience utilizing conflict resolution techniques, mentoring new hires, and developing team-building activities. I currently work in a high-pressure environment where attention to detail is extremely important, along with customer satisfaction. I recently completed my Bachelor of Business Administration and would like to transition into a leadership role where I can apply my education alongside my coaching and communication skills. Are you aware of any opportunities within your organization that might be a good fit to learn more about?

Pitch Two

Hello, my name is Olivia Wyatt, and I am a customer service professional with more than two years of experience. I am a problem solver and mentor with strong communication skills. I recently completed my Bachelor of Business Administration and would like to transition into a leadership role. I currently work at Cable Inc., where I focus on providing exceptional service and have trained new hires on all policies and procedures. I also developed a team-building activity around trust and communication that incorporated product knowledge and a customer satisfaction initiative. I feel I could bring those team-building and communication skills to a leadership role in your organization?

Which Pitch Works Better, and Why?

Pitch One is the stronger choice, for two specific reasons.

First, it leads with a clear, specific list of competencies tied directly to the role being discussed. Naming conflict resolution, mentoring, and team-building activity in the opening gives the listener an immediate, concrete picture of what Olivia brings to the table.

Second, it closes with a direct question. Asking whether there are openings worth exploring demonstrates initiative and moves the conversation forward. Pitch Two covers similar ground but buries the key details and ends without a clear ask.

The structure of Pitch One—specific skills up front, a clear goal in the middle, and a direct question at the end—is a reliable framework you can adapt to almost any professional context.

A Few Tips Before You Practice

Keep it conversational. A pitch that sounds memorized can feel stiff. Aim for natural delivery over word-for-word recitation.

Tailor it to the situation. The pitch you use at a networking event may differ slightly from the one you open a job interview with. Adjust the emphasis based on your audience.

Practice out loud. Timing yourself helps. Sixty to ninety seconds is shorter than it feels on paper.

Be specific. Vague phrases like "I am a hard worker" or "I have great communication skills" are less memorable than concrete examples.

End with a question. Give the other person something to respond to. A good pitch is the start of a conversation, not a closing statement.

Keep Building Your Professional Skills

Crafting a strong elevator pitch is one part of a broader set of professional communication skills that can support your career development over time. That said, balancing coursework with work, family, and other responsibilities takes more than motivation. It takes a plan.

Whether you are returning to school after years away, or pursuing a degree for the first time, developing strong study habits early can help you stay on track throughout your program.

1. Make the Most of Available Learning Tools

Do not limit your study resources to a single textbook or reading list. Many online programs offer a range of supporting materials, including interactive exercises, supplemental readings, and digital resources designed to reinforce what you are learning.

At AIU, our intellipath® adaptive learning platform is designed to personalize your coursework based on what you already know. Rather than spending time reviewing familiar material, intellipath helps you focus on the concepts that still need your attention, so your study time works more efficiently.

2. Build Your Schedule Around Your Life

Finding time for classes is one of the most common challenges adult learners may face. The good news is that online degree programs at AIU are designed to fit around a busy schedule, not the other way around.

Start by mapping out your weekly commitments, then identify blocks of time you can dedicate to coursework. Breaking your workload into smaller, manageable tasks makes it easier to stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed. Online learning eliminates commute time and gives you the flexibility to study when it works best for you.

3. Stay Present and Take Purposeful Notes

When you sit down to study, commit to that time fully. Whether you are working through course materials, completing readings, or engaging with your coursework online, focused attention makes a difference.

Take notes in your own words rather than copying text verbatim. Summarizing concepts as you go can help reinforce your understanding and make reviewing material before assessments more effective. Review your notes from previous sessions before moving forward to keep the material fresh.

4. Address Procrastination Before It Becomes a Problem

Procrastination is one of the most common reasons students fall behind, and it is rarely just about time management. Sometimes it stems from feeling uncertain about where to begin, anxiety about the material, or simply being stretched too thin.

Build a system that keeps you accountable. Use a calendar to track assignment deadlines and course milestones. If you find yourself stuck or unsure how to approach a task, reach out to your instructor or advisor early rather than waiting. Connecting with a fellow student as an accountability partner can also help you stay on course.

5. Use the Support Resources Available to You

You do not have to navigate your coursework alone. Most institutions offer a range of support services, including academic advisors, tutoring resources, and online library access. Take advantage of them.

At AIU, students have access to career service resources designed to support resume development, interview preparation, and job search strategies. Beyond academic support, do not overlook the people around you. Family, friends, and colleagues can all play a role in supporting your academic goals when you communicate what you need.

Put Your Experience to Work

One advantage adult learners often overlook is the credit they may already have earned. Through AIU Accelerate®, prior learning, professional certifications, and work experience may be evaluated for college credit, potentially reducing the number of courses you need to complete your degree.1

If you are ready to explore your options, review AIU's online degree programs to find a program that fits your academic goals and schedule.

1 Transfer credit is evaluated on an individual basis. Not all credits are eligible to transfer. See the University Catalog for transfer credit policies.

AIU cannot guarantee employment, salary, or career advancement. Not all programs are available to residents of all states.
REQ2226594 05/2026

Full-Time vs. Part-Time College: Which Option Best Fits Your Life?

Deciding to go back to college is a meaningful step. Once you have made that decision, one of the first practical questions you will face is how many courses to take each term. Choosing between full-time and part-time enrollment is not just a scheduling preference. It can affect your financial aid eligibility, your timeline to graduation, and how well you are able to balance school with the rest of your life.

At AIU, students who take twelve or more credit hours per quarter are considered full-time. Students who take fewer than twelve credit hours per quarter are considered part-time. Understanding what each path involves can help you make a more informed decision about how to structure your education.

Time and Pace: What Each Option Looks Like

Full-time enrollment typically means taking an average of three or more courses per quarter. This pace is designed for students who want to move through their program more quickly. It requires greater commitment each week, and balancing coursework with work or family responsibilities takes planning and consistency. Many students do pursue a full-time course load alongside other responsibilities, though individual experiences vary.

Part-time enrollment means taking fewer courses each term. This approach can offer more flexibility for students managing work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, or other commitments. The trade-off is a longer overall timeline to complete your degree.

Neither option is inherently better. The right choice depends on your personal circumstances, your academic goals, and the kind of support available to you.

How Enrollment Status Can Affect Your Financial Aid

Your enrollment status, whether full-time or part-time, can affect your eligibility for certain types of financial aid. This is an important factor to understand before you decide how many courses to take.

Federal student aid, including grants and loans, is impacted by enrollment status. Some aid programs require at least half-time enrollment to qualify, while others may be available to part-time students at adjusted amounts. The best way to understand your specific situation is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).

AIU's FAFSA Guide is designed to help walk you through the application process steps, including what information you will need, how contributors are identified, and what to expect after you submit. Filling out the FAFSA is the starting point for determining your eligibility for federal grants and loans.

Beyond federal aid, AIU offers a range of institutional grants and scholarships that may help make your education more affordable, regardless of whether you enroll full-time or part-time. These include options for new students, continuing students, alumni, veterans, military spouses, and international students, among others. You can review the full list of available options on the AIU Grants and Scholarships page.1

If you are considering changing your enrollment status mid-term, such as dropping from full-time to part-time, it is important to speak with your Financial Aid Advisor first. Changes in enrollment can affect aid disbursements already received for the term, and your advisor can help you understand the implications before you make any adjustments.

What to Consider When Making Your Decision

There is no single right answer when it comes to choosing between full-time and part-time enrollment. A few questions worth thinking through:

How much time can you realistically dedicate to coursework each week? Consider your work schedule, family responsibilities, and any other commitments.

How quickly do you want to complete your degree? A full-time pace generally shortens your timeline, while part-time enrollment extends it.

What does your financial aid package look like? Your enrollment status may affect the amount and type of aid you receive. Reviewing your aid eligibility with a Financial Aid Advisor can help you plan accordingly.

What kind of support do you have access to? The resources available to you, including academic support, flexible course formats, and advising, can make a meaningful difference in how manageable either path feels.

How AIU Is Designed to Support Both Paths

AIU's programs are structured to accommodate students at different stages of life and with different levels of availability. Whether you are pursuing your degree full-time or taking a more measured pace, AIU offers online learning formats designed to fit real-life schedules, with the flexibility to study when and where it works for you.

AIU's intellipath® technology adapts to your existing knowledge, so your coursework focuses on what you actually need to learn rather than reviewing material you have already mastered. This can make your time in school more efficient, regardless of how many courses you are taking in a given term.

Students also have access to career service resources designed to support resume development, interview preparation, and job search strategies throughout their academic journey.

If you are ready to explore your options, you can request information or speak with an AIU Admissions Advisor to learn more about program formats, the enrollment process, and financial aid options.

1 Financial aid is available for those who qualify. University grants or scholarships are based on established criteria as published in the University's Catalog or on its website and are awarded after verification that the conditions of eligibility have been met.

Skills, Potential Career Paths, and How to Prepare

Security threats to organizations are growing in both frequency and sophistication. As a result, many companies, government agencies, and financial institutions have turned to a specialized type of security professional to help identify weaknesses before malicious actors can exploit them: ethical hackers.

If you are exploring a career path in cybersecurity, understanding what ethical hackers do, where they work, and what skills they need can help you make a more informed decision about your education and career path.

What Is an Ethical Hacker?

An ethical hacker, sometimes called a "white hat" hacker or penetration tester, is a cybersecurity professional who is authorized to test an organization's systems, networks, and applications for vulnerabilities. Rather than exploiting weaknesses for harmful purposes, ethical hackers document what they find and report it to the organization so that security teams can address the gaps.

The work is closely related to the broader field of information security. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), information security analysts plan and carry out security measures to protect an organization's computer networks and systems, monitor for breaches, research emerging security trends, and recommend improvements to management.1 Penetration testing and ethical hacking represent a specialized skill set within this broader professional landscape.

What Ethical Hackers Do

Ethical hackers typically work through a structured testing process to evaluate an organization's security posture. Their work may include1:

Planning authorized security tests based on the organization's systems, goals and testing boundaries.

Identifying potential weaknesses in networks, applications, devices or system configurations.

Testing whether vulnerabilities could be exploited under controlled conditions.

Documenting findings, including the potential risk and technical details of discovered issues.

Recommending mitigation steps that security teams can use to address identified weaknesses.

This kind of work requires both technical depth and a strong understanding of how attackers think. It is not a role that exists in isolation; ethical hackers typically work alongside broader IT and information security teams.

Industries That Employ Security Professionals

Organizations across many sectors recognize the value of proactive security testing. Some of the industries where information security professionals, including those with penetration testing skills, may find opportunities include:

Government and defense: Federal and state agencies have long prioritized security testing to protect sensitive systems and infrastructure.

Finance and insurance: Banks, investment firms, and insurers handle large volumes of sensitive data and are frequent targets of cyberattacks.

Technology companies: Many technology firms run structured programs that invite security researchers to identify and report vulnerabilities in their products.

Healthcare: As patient data becomes increasingly digital, healthcare organizations have a growing need for professionals who can identify and address security risks.

Consulting: Many organizations hire third-party security consultants to conduct independent assessments of their systems.

Skills and Education for a Career Path in Cybersecurity

Pursuing a career path in information security or penetration testing typically begins with a strong educational foundation. A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is often cited as a common starting point for those entering the field.

According to the BLS, information security analysts typically need a bachelor's degree in a computer science field, along with related work experience.2 Employers may also prefer candidates who hold professional certifications in areas such as security analysis or penetration testing.

Beyond technical knowledge, professionals in this field may benefit from developing:

Analytical skills: The ability to assess systems, identify risks, and determine appropriate responses

Problem-solving skills: Security professionals must respond to alerts and uncover flaws that may not be immediately obvious

Communication skills: Explaining technical findings to both technical and nontechnical audiences is important

Attention to detail: Cyberattacks can be subtle, and being able to detect small changes in system behavior may signal a larger issue

Continuous learning: The threat landscape evolves constantly, and staying current with emerging methods and tools is essential

The job search process takes time, and starting early can help you feel more prepared when that moment arrives. Here are three reasons why beginning your career planning while still in school may work in your favor.

1. Clarify Your Career Direction Early

Before you can pursue a career path, it helps to have a general sense of where you want to go. Identifying your academic goals early gives you time to research what steps may be involved in reaching them.

You can start by exploring online resources related to your field of interest. You can also connect with professionals already working in that space. Building a LinkedIn profile is one way to begin making those connections, and reaching out for an informational interview can help you gather real-world perspective on what a career path in your area of interest may look like.

Once you have gathered that information, you can use it to create a plan of action, one that evolves as you progress through your program.

2. Use Your Time in School Strategically

Being enrolled in a degree program gives you a structured window of time to build both your academic foundation and your professional experience. Rather than treating these as separate tracks, consider how they can work together.

Look for internship opportunities, volunteer roles, or part-time positions that align with your area of study. These experiences can help you develop skills and build a record of relevant work that may strengthen your resume over time.

Starting this process early means you are not scrambling after graduation. You are arriving at that point with a plan already in motion.

3. Understand the Competitive Landscape

The job market is competitive, and employers often review many candidates for a single role. Standing out takes preparation, and preparation takes time.

Starting your career planning during your program, rather than after, gives you more time to develop the skills, experiences, and materials, such as a polished resume and a professional network, that may help you present yourself effectively to potential employers.

Small, consistent steps taken throughout your program can add up significantly by the time you are ready to apply.

Instead of asking only general questions, interviewers may ask about specific experiences to better understand how you approach different scenarios. This type of interview may include questions about teamwork, communication or problem-solving.

What Behavioral Interview Questions May Look Like

Behavioral interview questions often ask you to describe past situations and how you responded. These types of questions are designed to encourage detailed responses based on your experiences. These may include the following:

Describing an experience you had as part of a team

Explaining how you handled a challenge

Sharing an example of how you managed competing priorities

How To Prepare for Behavioral Interviews

Preparing for this type of interview may involve thinking through examples from your past experiences.A three step process to prepare might include the following:

Identifying how your skills align with the job description

Practicing how you will explain your experience clearly.

Considering times you worked with a difficult person and how you handled the situation.

Taking time to reflect on your experiences may help you feel more prepared when answering these types of questions.

Communicating Your Experience Clearly

When responding to behavioral questions, clarity can make a difference. Organizing your response in a way that explains the situation, your actions and the outcome can help you communicate your experience more effectively. Keeping your responses focused and specific may help the interviewer better understand your perspective.

That is a meaningful first step. The next question is which direction to take: accounting or finance?

While both fields share common ground, they approach the world of business from different angles. Understanding those differences can help you think through which program structure aligns with your academic interests and goals.

What Are Accounting and Finance?

Accounting focuses on the recording, organizing, and reporting of financial information. People who study accounting often work with financial records, budgets, and tax-related documentation. The work tends to center on accuracy, compliance, and a clear picture of where an organization stands financially.

Finance, by contrast, tends to be more forward-looking. Finance professionals often focus on planning, investment strategy, and managing financial resources over time. Whether working with a business or an individual, the work typically involves analyzing options and making decisions about how to allocate resources.

Both fields are grounded in a strong understanding of numbers, but they apply that understanding in different ways.

How Does the Coursework Differ?

If you pursue a business degree with a focus in either area, you will likely complete some shared core coursework. However, the specialized courses in each track reflect the distinct focus of each discipline.

Coursework in a finance program may include topics such as:

Financial Instruments

Risk Management

Asset and Debt Management

Budgeting

Financial Analysis

Coursework in an accounting program may include topics such as:

Principles of Accounting

Intermediate Accounting I and II

Cost Accounting

Auditing

Accounting Information Systems

You can review the specific course structures for the Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting to see how each program is organized.

What Potential Career Paths May Be Related to These Fields?

A business degree in accounting or finance may be relevant to a range of roles in business and financial services. Career paths can vary based on experience, location, and additional qualifications.

Roles that may be related to a business finance degree include:1

Management Analyst

Cost Estimator

Logistician

Business Operations Specialist

Roles that may be related to a business accounting degree include:1

Business Continuity Planner

Compensation, Benefits, and Job Analysis Specialist

Loss Prevention Manager

General and Operations Manager

A bachelor's degree is often noted as a common educational background for roles in both areas, though requirements vary by employer and position.
