As a small business owner, have you ever wondered how to build a bigger presence online and get your name out there?

Well, based on my experience, I can give you a shortcut version so you don’t have to wait to find it out on your own. It’s called guest blogging.

I came across the opportunity last year when I visited Entreprenista, a website geared toward the woman entrepreneur (and no, I am not a spokeswoman for them, but I have to give the credit where I received my opportunity to guest blog). The blog post I read said, “Are you interested in getting more exposure?” As you scrolled down, it listed the following bullets about blogging’s benefits:

  • Position you as a go-to expert
  • Give you access to a local audience on a national platform
  • Establish credibility by partnering with a trusted resource for women
  • Amplify awareness and recognition of your brand

  • Create SEO benefits every time you publish a piece of content online

The post was talking to ME! My only problem was myself and that little voice in my head that kept telling me I wasn’t a writer — but I told myself to just write about my experience on a specific topic that I think would be of interest to the public.

Becoming a guest blogger is an excellent way to build a name for yourself and your brand. It gives you an opportunity to speak your mind and build a following. It gives you the opportunity to get in front of a larger audience you thought you could only dream of. Oh, and best of all, it’s free marketing!

For some, writing comes easy; for others, not so much. So if you don’t think you can write, just think of something you have experienced that could be beneficial to another person, then take the time to write it down and share it. You will build a presence for yourself and at the same time, you can help someone.

Of course, not everyone is going to agree with what you are sharing, so do not get discouraged. If you want to get started, take the time to search online for topics or publications that interest you. This can lead you to some ideas for sites with blogs that you can share your expertise with and in the process, build a name for yourself and your brand.

Once you’ve identified these, reach out and ask to become a guest blogger. Remember to tell any publications you approach how your posts can help them and their audience — it can be a win-win situation.
