Mission, History & Values

The mission of the American InterContinental University System is to empower a diverse student body for academic, personal, and professional success, through a commitment to inclusive, student-centered support and lifelong learning.

American InterContinental University

In 1970, American InterContinental University (AIU) was founded in Europe on the premise that universities should transcend the bounds of the traditional, theory-based approach to education. AIU strives to provide students with a curriculum that can help them prepare to pursue their professional interests in today's globalized, cutting-edge industries.

For 50 years, AIU has offered specialized, flexible degree programs to students around the globe. The University is committed to developing curricula designed to provide students with career preparation in business, criminal justice, education, information technology, design, and healthcare management.

AIU's success is reflected in its presence throughout the international business community, alumni achievements, and its faculty's commitment. Today, AIU operates campuses in Atlanta and Houston as well as Online, which launched in 2001.

California Southern University

California Southern University, which was founded in 1978, is an entirely different type of university designed with the learner in mind. As a distance learning institution, CalSouthern provides a 100% online educational experience to learners that includes monthly class starts. With over 40 years of operational history, the University offers 25+ associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, and certificate programs in the behavioral sciences, business, nursing, education, and criminal justice. Courses are taught by faculty who are practitioners in their fields. In 2022, CalSouthern was welcomed into the AIU system.

Trident University International: A History of Excellence and Leadership

Established in 1998, Trident University International (TUI) was the first 100% online university to gain regional accreditation from WSCUC. TUI has a specially designed unique learning model in online education. The University is also alma mater to nearly 27,000 military, veteran and adult learners, which showcases its ability to cater to the needs of students with diverse professional backgrounds.

Whether active duty military and their families or civilians, TUI students share a desire to excel and make a difference in the world by taking their education to the next level. In 2020, TUI was acquired by American InterContinental University and welcomed into the AIU System.

AIU System: One University Network

The American InterContinental University System (or the “AIU System”) is composed of American InterContinental University, California Southern University, and Trident University International. In November 2020, the AIU System was established to give its member institutions the framework to continue serving their unique student populations as part of a single entity.

The AIU System is committed to providing quality and accessible higher education opportunities for a diverse student population, including adult or non-traditional learners and the military community. AIUS member institutions each offer a quality education experience for students while benefitting from a combined University System.

The American InterContinental University System is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Perdoceo Education Corporation (formerly Career Education Corporation) acquired American InterContinental University in 2001.

AIUS Philosophy & Outcomes

The American InterContinental University System has a special commitment to promoting educational opportunity, is committed to quality teaching and learning, and all of its activities are geared towards student success. To this end, the System places emphasis on the academic, professional, and personal growth of each student, and pursues this aim with a commitment to institutional integrity and ethics. Programs, policies, and institutional initiatives validate AIUS’s achievement of Institutional Learning Outcomes and support the System’s Mission, Vision, and Values. These foundational statements are evaluated periodically and modified, as appropriate, to meet the needs of the student body at each institution in the System.

As an institution committed to quality and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the System views integrity as an underlying tenet of its Mission. The AIUS philosophy is that higher education must encompass a holistic approach to educational content and delivery; view the student as central to the learning process; and remove barriers related to time, space, and location that sometimes can encumber a student’s learning.

AIUS Institutional Learning Outcomes

It is expected that every student who graduates from any program will be able to meet a common set of institutional learning outcomes (ILO). The ILOs for the System are as follows:

Graduates should have acquired a common body of knowledge in the discipline.
Graduates should be able to communicate proficiently through professional writing and oral presentation to general and specialized audiences.
Graduates should be able to analyze real-world data and information to draw conclusions and solve problems.
Graduates should be able to identify, evaluate, and use valid information sources.
Graduates should be able to apply critical thinking skills to solve problems.
Graduates should be able to contribute positively to a diverse human society within local and global contexts.
Graduates should be able to demonstrate ethical behavior in personal and professional settings.
